Amateur Inline League

Woodward West is proud to announce the second AIL event, which is to take place Saturday, May 13th.

The Amateur Inline League’s first event, on March 18th, was a huge success. The event drew competitors from all areas of the Southwest, including Utah and Texas. 76 rollerbladers came to experience something more than just a typical amateur comp.

“It’s the classiest competition series in rollerblading,” said head judge, Chris Mitchell. “Competitors in the AIL get a free Rollerblade goodie bag, an official AIL T-shirt and a professional head shot which goes up on the website. Plus, they get to skate at Woodward West!

Woodward West is a 54,000 sq ft Mecca, and the place was packed. “I have always dreamed of seeing and skating Woodward West, said a 12 year old competitor from San Francisco, CA.

The energy and excitement was off the hook. Smiles, laughter, and cheers filled the building as kids skated with friends and professional athletes, such as Fabiola Da Silva, who gave pointers to the Intermediate 10-14yr old division.

Street skating legend, Richie Velasquez, said, “Having professional athletes as mentors is very important to us. We want every competitor that participates to have a memorable experience. Whether you are just learning to roll around or you are the next world champion, there is always something to learn from someone else. Some competitors need help landing a certain trick, where others just need encouragement and help with how to roll in on a 2 ft ramp.”

The competitors each took the spotlight for two 60-second runs. They were judged on creativity, difficulty, & style. Announcer extraordinaire, Davee Blair, hyped up each run as he called out tricks and cool info about each competitor.

The award ceremony was a crowd favorite. A large Olympic style podium was brought to the center of the building. The top three in each division received medals while others were awarded certificates for such notable feats as Best Style and Trick of the Day. At the Amateur Inline League, everyone is recognized!

Competitors were also a part of a huge free raffle in which every participant won something. Prizes included: T-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, wheels, frames, and a new pair of skates. The organization is very thankful for the support from the Inline industry.
