Interview: Doug Urquhart of Misled Media
Misled Media’s new DVD :: Barely Dead :: Coming Soon
RW: First of all let me say congratulations on the success of Black Market. The video had a lot of hype leading up to its release, and if you ask me it lived up to the hype and even more. Were you surprised at the success of the film?
DOUG: First off, thanks for the kind words. I was excited to see it was a popular flick… it wouldn’t have been possible without all my good friends: Jero, Julian, Brent, Will, Brian, Michael, Kenny, Montre, and all the great people we got to spend time with in Europe and across the US. Thanks to everyone who helped make Black Market a solid release.
RW: Barely Dead is one of the most anticipated videos that I have heard about in my 8 or so years of Rollerblading. Does the fact that so many kids are expecting so much out of this video put any pressure on you to produce a great product?
DOUG: It explains why the film has not yet been released, seriously…! Here is some of the latest: Justin Eisinger and I have been taking our time perfecting the ultimate script. I’m working on upconverting all the archived material (ex. Hoax I & 2, Mad Beef master BetaSp’s) to DVCPRO HD via a TeraNex. I have to fit into open time slots at a local studio (Crawford.com) after hours to use the TeraNex… so I have to be patience at times. My Sony HDV camera is in So Cal right now as Carl Sturgess, Justin E, & Wes Driver help re-shoot interviews with Shima and Elliott. Matt Andrews is brewing up motion graphics… Perfection is key. We are not rushing anything on this project… but it is coming very soon. I promise!
RW: We saw amazing skating in Black Market including profiles on Julian Bah, Will Gordon, Montre Livingston, Brian Aragon, and Brent Hicks, who can we expect to see profiles of in Barely Dead?
DOUG: Barely Dead (the documentary portion) will not have any profile formats. However, throughout the film you will be acquainted with:
Chris Haffey, Alex Broskow, Cameron Card, Jon Julio, Azikewee Anderson, Shane Coburn, Chris Farmer, Jeff Stockwell, Mike Opalek, Jon Elliott, Julian Bah, Walt Austin, Robert Guererro, Michael Braud, Sean Keane, Pat Lennon, Dave Kollasch, Franky Morales, J.C. Rowe, Damian Wilson, Nick Wood, Arlo Eisenberg, Jess Dyrenforth, Tom Hyser, Brian Shima, Eric Shrihjn, Doug (a 67 year old ‘first-gen’ rec blader from Minnesota), Dave Carnie (oops…disregard, he rejected the interview!), & many more! Simply stated, amazing skating.
RW: As if the skating wasn’t enough to make Black Market a classic, you added an additional disc with some amazing interviews with some legendary veterans in our sport, should we expect to see 2 discs or any interviews with the legends in Barely Dead?
DOUG: Barely Dead will be a double disc set (really 2 discs this time!) in a custom 6 panel recycled cardboard collectors case w/ an 8 page color booklet & sticker. The first disk will be the full documentary… this is basically the history of rollerblading. I will also include montage edits on this DVD… similar to Black Market DVD menu format. It will feature the option to play the documentary or skate montages. The second DVD will feature the documentary in full HD. However, you will only be able to play this back on your computers. If you are fortunate enough to have a nice 20-inch+ Cinema Display you will be due for some high quality viewing.
RW: The music in Black Market was definitely a hit amongst the rolling community; do the skater’s chose the songs in their sections? If not who does?
DOUG: The music in Barely Dead is original for the most part… lots of sampled material, but nothing too over the top. Julio hooked me up with Sage Francis who has permitted his music to be used. Unknown Prophets are also down. Richard of BeatChefs in ATL is handling a majority of the produced music. James Reetzski is also providing some fresh beats for the film.
RW: I got a different feeling after watching black market as apposed to other skate videos. It reminded me of Hoax 2 in a way because of how up close and personal you got with the skaters. Instead of just watching clip after clip of them skating you got some great footage that showed their personality. What do you do to make the film seem so much more personal to the viewer?
DOUG: All it takes is some interaction and direction. Skate tours are always insane, so why not cover an entire summer’s travel documentary style??? I was influenced by Hoax II when it was first released. I remember hanging with Arlo, Brooke, Mike, Brian, Brandon, Craig, & Evan at their stop in Atlanta. It was a definite influence… Hoax II is in the history books.
RW: The Black Market DVD included some older sections from Masters of Delusion and Hashassins as bonus sections, will there be anything like that in the bonus of Barely Dead?
DOUG: Of course….
RW: Tell us about your new website, I checked it out today and it is looking really nice.
DOUG: It was a long time coming because I was always so busy juggling other aspects of the film and school. Now that I finally sat down and knocked it out I feel a bit better about things. I’m working on the new trailer right now… Editors note: check out www.misledlab.com
RW: In Black Market you guys travel to and skate a wide variety of locations, what areas are you guys going to cover in Barely Dead?
DOUG: I traveled to Miami, SoCal, NorCal, and all over the South East.
RW: Thanks for your time, anything you want to let the readers know about Misled Media, Black Market or Barely Dead?
DOUG: I appreciate everyone who supports my work. Without such a strong force behind me I would be unable to release these films. Thanks to all!
